Self-storage facilities have become a big business nearly one in 10 American households uses one of about 50,000 self-storage facilities. The sector has generated more than $22 billion in annual US revenues.


The economic drivers or by two primary factors. First people continue to acquire things that can't be consumed like furniture, toys, knick knacks and they are hesitant to or can't throw out. Self-storage offers space strapped customers a simple, secure place to store things they don't need right now but can't bring themselves to throw away.


Second, despite the short-term nature of the rental contracts, people are reluctant to finally deal with or at least clean out items they've placed in storage. Estimates are that 1/3 of storage space is filled with property that have been there for over three years.
